China

China is an old nation that has a long history around 5000 years. The two longest river in China are the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. The map shape of China is like a flying chicken located along the East of Asia. The most well-known engineering in China is the Great Wall.

China is a cultural region, an ancient civilization, and, depending on perspective, a national or multinational entity occupying a large portion of land in East Asia.

China has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and is the source of such major inventions as what the British scholar and biochemist Joseph Needham called the "four great inventions of Ancient China": paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing. Historically China's cultural sphere has been very influential in East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing system being adopted, to varying degrees, by its neighbors Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.

The last Chinese Civil War has resulted in two political entities using the name China: the People's Republic of China (PRC), commonly known as China, which controls mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau; and the Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as Taiwan, which controls the island of Taiwan and some nearby islands.

Nature Sounds

The sky is blue, the ocean is blue;

Get out of the house and listen to the sound of the nature.

The nature is full of vitality,

Sounds are everywhere,

To enjoy the nature sounds.

Listen carefully!

The hummingbird is singing,

The swallow is singing,

The White-cheeked Pintail is singing.

The red-crowned crane is singing.

To shake off the insight of the common people,

To recall yourself in this world.

To feel the comfortable affair of the world,

To enjoy the life you wanted,

To enjoy the nature sounds.

People are walking in the raining,

Engineers are building the skyscraper.

Finally, the world is changing,

The sound of the world is also changing.

The sounds of nature are different when the weather is raining or sunny.

So please enjoy the nature sounds.

Like the birds are “singing” in the forest,

Like the fishes are “singing” in the river,

Like the lions are “singing” on the dry land.

Please enjoy the nature sounds!

Taicheng Town

Taicheng town is the location of the Taishan city's government. It is also the political, economic, cultural, and transportational center of Taishan. It has a total land area of 18 square kilometers and a population of more than 130,000 people. It governs 3 inner city administrative districts and 6 suburban village councils.

TAISHAN INTERNATIONAL WEB

Chinese Taishan People Website
Taishan (also known as Taishanshi or Taishan City) is a small beautiful famous Chinese city located 140 kilometers west of Hong Kong, 100 kilometers southwest of Guanzhou, or 80 kilometers west of Macau. It lies along the Guangdong Province coastline on the southwest corner of the Pearl River Delta area bordering the South China Sea.
China Map Pearl River Delta Map
Taishan has a land area of 3286 square kilometers. Its natural scenery consists of tall mountains, hills, basins, plains, and beaches. Shangchuan/Xiachuan Islands, Zihuagong (location of province's largest stone engraving from the Ming Dynasty displaying the words "Sea Without Waves") and Mt. Shihua are listed among the "Hundred Scenic Spots of South Guangdong". Sanhe Town has a high-quality natural hot spring or geyser. Taishan is also rich in natural mineral resources; more than 100 minerals have already been discovered.
Taishan Scene
Taishan is well known as being "China's First Homeland for Overseas Chinese". In fact, it is the native place to about 1.3 million overseas Chinese people from over 80 countries, more than its local population of 1 million. Most of these overseas Chinese are first-generation or second-generation immigrants living in foreign countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, or England. The Chinese community in the United States has been dubbed the name "Taishan's Other Half". Since its people are widespread everywhere around the world, the English term Taishanese is commonly used to refer to its people or its dialect.
Famous People Volleyball Game
Taishan is also reputable in its volleyball activities. Premier Zhou En-Lai once stated, "Taishan is Half of Country's (China) Volleyball System." Taishan also has an excellent educational system, benefitting the nation with large amounts of talented people.
Since the implementation of the country's Open-Door Economic Reform Policy, overseas Chinese have made a deep impact in helping the development of every aspect of Taishan's infrastructure, particularly its commercial enterprises, agriculture, transportation, communication, and electricity. Over the years, a sum of 1.07 billion HK dollars (139 million US dollars) have been donated by overseas Chinese back to its homeland for public welfare projects. Technology, education, culture, sports, and health continue to attain new achievements. Taishan is thus ranked as one of Guangdong's Province advanced educational city and one of China's top hundred cities in technological strength. Taishan's appearance is constantly changing to a fresh new improved look daily. Since 1949, the city's central district land area has increased from 0.7 square kilometers to 22 square kilometers today. For two consecutive years, the city was raved as the "Country's (China) Clean City". Public order is stable while culture progresses, as in ripples.
The current newly appointed government has setup the following plan for running the city today:
  1. Expand its open-door policy, thus attracting more foreign investment,
  2. Accelerate economic reforms in all its business enterprises,
  3. Further develop constituent town economies,
  4. Further develop its own city economy,
  5. Effectively administer engineering projects, such as the expressway construction,
  6. Advance its cultural spirit under civil law and order.
TAISHAN "HOISAAN" NAME
Taishan was founded in the 12th year of the Hongzhi Reign during the Ming Dynasty. Originally, it was actually known as Xinning County; it was later changed to Taishan County in 1914. On April 17, 1992, the State Council approved promoting it to city status.

The name "Taishan" reflects the Mandarin pinyin equivalent of the Chinese ideographic name Ideographic Name for Taishan City. Although Mandarin is the accepted standard dialect in Chinese pronunciation, the local Cantonese and Taishanese dialects are more widely used by its people. Thus, the Cantonese pronunciation "Toisaan" or the Taishanese pronunciation "Hoisaan" is more recognizable by its local and overseas people. The list below allows you to hear the distinction between the three dialects for this term.

Taishanese Cantonese Mandarin

It should be noted that the pinyin name "Taishan" is also used to designate a famous mountain within China. This mountain is not related to Taishan City at all except that both share the same pinyin name. However, its ideographic name Ideographic name for Taishan mountain and its Cantonese pronunciation "Taaisaan" are different. The mountain is located south of Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province. The mountain was famous as a mountain of great spiritual significance; the sun was supposed to begin its westward journey across the sky from this mountain. Just south of the mountain is also the birthplace of the great Chinese philosopher, Confucius. Since there are currently some active websites that describe this mountain, both in Chinese and English, we will not go into much detail here.

ABOUT THIS WEBSITE
Although many overseas Chinese have kept in touch with their native land and/or culture, many have also lost touch as Chinese immigrants start a new life in their new places. Most second-generation Chinese immigrants or after are probably unfamiliar with Chinese reading or writing. However, they can speak some Chinese (which was taught to the by their parents) and might know that their parents/grandparents come from Taishan. TAISHAN.COM hopes that this English version could help bridge the awareness gap between these immigrants and their homeland.

This English version of TAISHAN.COM addresses its website to two types of English-literate audiences:

  1. non-Chinese people who have an interest in learning about China and its culture, and
  2. Chinese people, particularly second-generation immigrants or after, who have a desire to learn more about their homeland.

Established in June 18, 2000, the taishan.com website currently has two versions, the Simplified Chinese version and an English version. However, unlike most other multilingual websites, taishan.com is able to toggle to the appropriate language based on the user's operating system. Thus, if the user enters the address "taishan.com" and the user's system language is English, this website shall automatically redirect to "http://www.taishan.com/english/index.htm" which is the English version main page. This feature allows us to become a convenient portal site for both people here in China or elsewhere alike without wasting a main entrance page.

However, if you can read Simplified Chinese and you have GB fonts installed on your computer, we strongly encourage you to visit it because we have spent more time and energy in developing that section because of its larger audience. If you can read Simplified Chinese and you have a Windows PC, we suggest installing a third party Chinese viewer program such as NJStar. If you have a Windows XP or better system, another option is to install East Asian languages support. Please refer to the Microsoft website for instructions on installing it.

The Taishan government also maintains an "official" website which also has a lot of information about Taishan. However, their website is targeted more towards the local perspective. Their English version is http://www.tsinfo.com.cn/en/index.htm and Chinese version is http://www.tsinfo.com.cn. Some of the information from TAISHAN.COM will be referred to theirs as they have spent a lot of resources in developing it. We intend to add more content to the TAISHAN.COM website in the months to come. If you have any suggestions on what you would like to see, please feel free to email jimmy@taishan.com. If you intend to visit Taishan in the next trip and you travel services such as hotel, transportation, or English services, you may also email jimmy@taishan.com.

Thank you for visiting TAISHAN.COM!

Flash Symbols

In this Tutorial you'll learn the basic concepts of Flash symbols, symbol types (graphics, buttons and movieclips), creating and using them.

What is a Flash Symbol?

A symbol is a reusable object used/created in Flash. A Symbol can be reused throughout your movie or imported and used in other movies. There are three types of symbols: Graphics, Buttons, and Movieclips.

A copy of a symbol used in the movie is called an Instance, which can have its own independent properties (like color, size, function, etc.) different from the original symbol. All symbols used in a flash movie are stored in the Library from where you can drag-and-drop new instances of the symbols into your movie. When a symbol is edited all of its instances get updated, but changing the properties, effects or dimensions of an instance of a symbol does not affect the original symbol or other instances.

Importance of using Flash Symbols

Using flash symbols is very crucial to the file size of your Flash movie. The Flash file size depends largely on the size of all the graphics and texts used in the movie (both symbols and non-symbols) - here the major advantage of using symbols is that a symbol's size is taken into consideration only once even if it is used a hundred times - this is the true power of Flash. Unused symbols in your library are not counted in the size of your movie.

Important Tip: Get used to using symbols in flash right from the beginning and name them neatly for easy maintenance. It is a very tough job optimizing your file size if you don't use symbols from scratch!

The Three Types of Symbols

Graphic symbols are reusable static images that are used mainly to create animations. Any drawn vector/plain text/imported bitmap (photo), or combinations of these, can be converted into a single controllable object: as a graphic symbol. They have only one frame in their timeline. Learn how to create a graphic symbol.

Button symbols are used for timeline navigation - They add interactivity to the movie and respond to mouse clicks, key press or rollovers/rollout, and other actions. You define the graphics associated with various button states (Up/Over/Down/Hit), and then assign actions to the instance of a button. They have 4 frames in their timeline - one each for the up, over and down states, and one to define the hit area of the button. Learn how to create a button symbol.

Movieclip symbols are reusable pieces of flash animation - consisting of one or more graphic/button symbols - thus they are flash movies within your flash movie. They have their own non-restricted Timeline (any number of layers and frames - just like the main timeline) that plays independent of the main movie's Timeline. The best thing about using movieclips is that you can control them from actionscript - you can change their dimensions, position, color, alpha, and other properties and can even duplicate and delete them.
